In The Great Gatsby, the green light is an important symbol that represents Gatsby's dreams and hope. He always looks at the light across the bay because it reminds him of Daisy and what he wants but can't have. The light is really close but also far away, just like his goal of being with her.

As the story goes on, the green light becomes more of a symbol of how dreams are hard to reach, especially when they are based on the past. Gatsby never really gets what he wants, which shows that sometimes people chase things that are impossible. The green light shows how the American Dream is not always real for everyone.
